Why buyers go looking in the first place
Profound has the largest signal sample on this site — 51 hand-verified buyer signals, more than any other tool we've reviewed. Pricing is the single most common complaint theme in that set: 12 of 51 signals are about cost, and every one of them is negative. Nobody in our count calls Profound's pricing fair or good value.
The complaints share a shape. A G2 reviewer: “what comes with having access to that great data and those fancy features is an enterprise price tag… a little bit out of reach for the smaller operators.” A YouTube commenter, more bluntly: “Way overpriced… Maybe for a Fortune 1000 company but not for small business or small agencies.” On Reddit: “Profound looks good on paper but it's SO expensive… I do not love this pricing model.” And separately, a buyer who'd actually run demos summed up the top tier in four words: “$$$. Think mid four figures per month.”
This guide doesn't add new research on Profound or re-litigate its full review. It re-sorts five reviews we've already published — the ones where a real buyer was choosing between Profound and something cheaper — into one place, organized by the question a priced-out buyer actually asks: what else is there, and which one fits me.
Five tools buyers actually compared it to, cheapest first
Every tool below has its own full comparison against Profound or against a tool Profound buyers also considered, already published on this site. Nothing here is re-derived — these are the same prices and the same buyer quotes, just gathered into one sorted list.
| TOOL | ENTRY PLAN | WHAT BUYERS SAY |
|---|---|---|
| Rankscale | $20/mo | Cheapest of any tool in our count; zero pricing complaints, called “best bang for the buck” on both Reddit and G2. See Otterly vs Rankscale vs Peec. |
| Otterly | $29/mo | Cheapest entry point against Profound directly; the Standard tier jump (€189/mo) draws its own capacity complaints. See Profound vs Otterly. |
| Peec | $95/mo | Fixed, predictable bill; the most independently praised as fair value of any tool we've counted. See Otterly vs Rankscale vs Peec. |
| Scrunch | $250–300+/mo | Closer to Profound's own price band, but the first monitor in our count where buyers describe it going beyond diagnostics into actual strategy. See Scrunch vs Profound. |
| AthenaHQ | $300+/mo, credit-based | Deeper insight per reviewers, but a metered bill that three independent sources say gets unpredictable as usage scales. See AthenaHQ vs Peec. |
| Profound | $99–399+/mo | Growth tier includes 3 seats; top-tier deals run “mid four figures per month” per one buyer who ran demos; no free trial at any tier. |
Sort yourself by budget and what you actually need
Who should still choose Profound
The 12 pricing complaints don't mean Profound is a bad product — they mean it's priced for a buyer most of the people posting about it aren't. Our count has 5 positive Profound signals, and they cluster around exactly what the price is buying: a reviewer called its 8-LLM coverage — including Grok, DeepSeek, and Meta AI — “ahead of everyone else.” Another said it “has everything. Full feature set, top-tier support.” A third credited its panel-based prompt data with demographic segmentation as “genuinely unique, nobody else has it.”
If your budget already absorbs an enterprise price tag and you need the widest model coverage in the category, the pricing complaints in this count aren't a warning — they're buyers who were never Profound's target segment in the first place. Everyone else in the 12-signal pricing pile is describing a mismatch between their budget and Profound's tier, not a flaw in the tool.
